But probably the most popular and remarkable of the pop variations of 'Summertime' is by Janis Joplin and her band, Huge Brother and Holding Company.
And Joplin's roaring vocals bring an entire new sincere dimension and suffering to the tune. It's certainly a sharp contrast to the more traditional variations. Here she is performing 'Summer' live in 1969 with the Kozmic Blues Band. In 1976, delivered a revolutionary production of Porgy and Bess. The rating was brought back to its initial length and this assisted revive interest in the piece for a new generation.
The production included a spectacular cast, with bass-baritone Willard White as Porgy. Soprano Harolyn Blackwell played Clara and performed a remarkable variation of 'Summer'. Ira Gershwin's widow Leonore was amongst those to applaud this production and it was later on adapted by Nunn for a film in 1993.
